Sport Specific Training

The term "sport specific training" gets thrown around a lot in the world of sports performance. Depending on who you ask it could mean something different. To us at Sweep the Sheds, sport specific training means that we are training the athletic qualities required by a particular sport. For example, lacrosse requires powerful hip and knee extension, stability of the trunk, and mobility in the hips (among many others). Therefore, we design a program to address these needs.

Sport specific training does not mean that exercises should mimic sport movements in the gym. In some instances, this can actually compromise an athlete’s technique in his/her sport because adding load to a sport skill movement can negatively affect the execution of that particular motor pattern.

To create a sport specific strength and conditioning regimen, look at your sport, analyze what broad athletic traits it requires, and improve at those things. As a gentle nudge in the right direction, most sports require speed, strength, power, mobility, reaction time, cardiovascular conditioning, and body awareness. Choose exercises that develop these traits. Best of luck with your training today!
