Weightlifting, or Olympic Weightlifting, refers to the barbell sport consisting of two contested lifts, the Snatch and the Clean & Jerk. Our Weightlifting offering focuses on improving recreational and competitive athletes’ performance in these two lifts. We do this through balanced, intelligent programming, expert coaching, high quality equipment and most importantly, a space where Weightlifters can train with other Weightlifters. We are proud of our diverse club membership and encourage all athletes, big and small, young and old and all genders to take part in Naperville’s original Weightlifting club.

FAQ’s

Do I need to have prior experience to learn the lifts?

No experience required. This is the type of club that is welcoming to novices and elite athletes alike. We are enthusiastic to teach the snatch and clean & jerk to those who want to learn in our “Fundamentals” course.

Do I need to compete?

No. Olympic Weightlifting is a sport that many pursue as a fitness hobby to give direction to their training. It is a mentally engaging and exciting way to train for athleticism, strength, and health. Athletes from other sports will a find great value in training the lifts for their game day performance.

If I want to compete, can STS prepare me for a meet?

Yes. We are a USA Weightlifting registered club and offer opportunities for our lifters to train for and compete in meets.

What if I’m not mobile enough to do the full movements?

This is quite common and not a barrier to getting started. Our staff is well equipped to deal with mobility restrictions and systematically, incrementally, and safely progress athletes towards achieving great positions in the classic lifts.

These lifts look challenging, why should I learn them?

  1. The Snatch and Clean & Jerk are incredibly fun! It is a primal human feat to take a weight from the ground and hold it over one’s head. If you are a physically cultured person, it is likely that you will enjoy this style of training.

  2. The lifts are arguably a one-stop-shop for training athleticism because they train power, mobility, force absorption, body awareness and a host of psychological intangibles.

  3. They make you physically strong, build an aesthetic physique, and foster confidence.
